Services provided at the centre include:
• Medical: management of injuries, provision of Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) to prevent HIV transmission, Emergency Contraceptive Pills (ECP), prevention and treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), forensic collection and management (collection of physical evidence and samples, filling in of Post Rape Care (PRC) and P3 forms etc
• Psycho-social care: trauma counseling of survivor and family/relatives, HIV counseling and Testing (HCT) and adherence counseling
• Legal counseling and support: referral to police, court preparation and watching brief in court
• Referral for specialized services (medical, psycho-social and legal)
The Centre has developed initiatives to:
• provide comprehensive, quality and continuous care for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence as outlined in the national guidelines on management of sexual violence in Kenya;
• offer improved physical and psychological services in a confidential and supportive environment;
• assist with legal and social counselling to Survivors who have experienced violence and their families;
• monitor and evaluate the follow-up care of survivors;
• create evidence-based outcomes promoting public health care alongside legal advocacy;
• raise awareness around the physical, social, and legal implications of sexual and gender-based violence at the individual, community, hospital, national and regional levels.
Activities to commemorate the Coast Province General Hospital’s (CPGH) Gender Based Violence Recovery Centre (GBVRC) GBVRC’s fifth anniversary were held on 24th August 2012 and began with a 10 km procession from the treasury to the CPGH parking lot where the main activities for the day were held. Key guests at the function included: Hon Lady Justice (Rtd) Effie Owuor ( chairperson to the taskforce implementing the Sexual Offences Act ), Bart Ouvry (Belgian Ambassador to Kenya) Prof. Marleen Temmerman , Mr. Marwa (County Commissioner, Mombasa) and representatives from the Ministry of Medical Services (MOMS) amongst others. Information, Education and communication material (banners, fliers/ brochures and T-shirts) were prepared create awareness on GBV and also enhance visibility for the GBVRC. The Ministry of Medical Services and other partners were involved in the planning of this event.
During 2012, a total of 611 survivors were seen. From the inauguration of the centre (May 2007 to Dec 2012) a total of 3,275 survivors have been attended to. The cases seen range from defilement, rape, sodomy, physical assault, sexual assault, multiple assault and indecent act. On average up to 80% of the survivors are female a majority of whom are under the age of 18. Services at the GBVRC are provided by 3 Clinical officers (on- call) from CPGH, a nurse/ counselor, a counselor, a legal officer and a community outreach officer. Of these 619 cases, 603 were eligible for PEP however up to 54% of the survivors presented late (after 72) hours conse- quently missing out on PEP and ECP (for the eligible females who presented after 120 hours). Access to these services is hampered by lack of knowledge on how to respond in the event of a violation coupled with further lack of knowledge on existence and location of services. This thus calls for increased community engagement and sensitization.
During the year (2012) a total of 100 health workers from 6 public health facilities (CPGH, Port Reitz, Tudor, Likoni, Mtwapa Health Centre and Kilifi District hospital) in Mombasa and Kilifi counties were trained on how to manage survivors of sexual violence. The objective of the training was to improve quality of services. Dr. Jen- nifer Othigo (Ministry of Medical Services) and Dr. Soita Musimbi (CPGH) were the lead trainers. Another group of 16 staff from the office of Provincial Director of Medical Services were sensitized on SGBV. ICRHK is currently in the process of providing assistance to Kilifi District Hospital and Mtwapa Health Centre to set up GBVRCs within their facilities. The objective of this is to improve access to services by bringing the services closer to the people.
